Painter
Sculptor
菅原 礼次
Reiji Sugawara likes to delve beneath the surface of the things he depicts by using different mediums of expression (Japanese painting, oil painting and sculpture) to explore the subjects.
By repeatedly depicting the same subject in various mediums, he attempts to dive into his subjects’ characters.
Reiji’s study of three dimensionality helps to give his two-dimensional work more conviction. Conversely, his playful two-dimensional expression helps him to creat abstract expressions in his three-dimensional work.
By going back and forth between creating two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks, he continually refines each approach and expresses his subjects in new and exciting ways.
